SparkMap: Firefly
Reporting App
SparkMap is a prototype app for reporting localized firefly
activity, enabling users to contribute data to
firefly monitoring groups. Ecological science has linked
firefly density to overall ecosystem health. The app
supports a decentralized, collaborative approach to tracking
populations, helping identify trends and support
conservation. Designed with user-centered principles,
SparkMap features an intuitive interface, offline
functionality, and data visualization tools to make
ecological monitoring fun, accessible, and impactful.
Project Highlights:
-
Focused on user centered design by conducting
user research to understand the needs of ecologists,
conservationists, and citizen scientists.
-
Prioritized ease of use and accessibility to ensure
the app is inclusive and functional with novel reporting
tools.
-
Integration of progress indicators with clear feedback.
-
Structured with an emphasis on information architecture
and visual hierarchy, emphasizing user flow and
visual consistency.
-
Addressed unique challenges like offline data collection
to ensure functionality in remote areas with
limited connectivity.
-
Designed an interactive map to display firefly activity
hotspots, enabling users to explore trends and
patterns over time.
